The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera continues the 2019/20 Barnett & Company Masterworks Series with Miraculous Mandarin at the Tivoli Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Review for the performance:
The CSO will be joined by internationally acclaimed cellist Thomas Landschoot for Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major, a work known for showcasing the many facets of the cello. The performance will also include contemporary American composer Gabriela Lena Franks Three Latin American Dances and Bartoks The Miraculous Mandarin Suite, a piece that shares one of classical musics most sordid tales through dramatic strings, an iconic waltz, and expressive winds.
"Hungarian composer Bela Bartok's work is very colorful, innovative, and exciting, says Kayoko Dan, CSO music director. Gabriela Lena Frank's music is often influenced by Bartok's works, and you may hear some similarities in motives and orchestration. Frank's work is extremely fun, exhilarating, and skillfully crafted, and I know the audience will fall in love with her style of music. Thomas Landschoot is a very sensitive musician who will bring out the most intricate nuances in Haydn's music, and I am looking forward to working with him and sharing his talents with the Chattanooga audience."
