Californian John Lofton, bass trombonist, will be the guest soloist with the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera for the concert Thursday, March 28, at the Tivoli Theatre, 709 Broad St, Lofton will be featured on Concerto for Bass Trombone & Orchestra by Chris Brubeck in the program that also includes "E Pluribus Unum" by Jonathan McNair and Symphony No. 10 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Written after the death of Stalin, Shostakovich's monumental Symphony No. 10 evokes despair, terror, darkness, light and climactic triumph. Brubeck's Concerto for Bass Trombone is fun, whimsical and often described as joyous, bright and a little adventurous. Lofton is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. He began his professional career as bass trombonist with the State Orchestra of Mexico before moving to Hawaii to perform with the Honolulu Symphony.
